Many people have probably read that Joomla! stalwart Community Builder is being updated to run natively on Joomla 1.5. You can read the announcement here.
But if you have been reading the CB forum thread on the announcement, you might have even seen this post from Beat (CB Developer):
Regarding roadmap: following releases are currently planed for 2008, with work already advanced quite well for all of them:
CB 1.2
CB 1.3
CB 2.0
Exciting stuff to be sure. Here’s hoping that the CB team can make their tight schedule. I’m also hoping that a 2.0 CB would entail a major design overhaul. It would be great to see the CB Profile page become properly modular, with plugins having much more freedom.
From what I have read, to achieve real flexibility in an elegant design, users need to purchase additional software. I am a supporter of professional developers, and I can understand why some developers make commercial products for open source projects. However, to sell a product which customizes an open source extension for an open source CMS, seems to going against the ecosystem slightly.

I’m looking to do my first CB install, so will try 1.2
Its amazing how hard it is to get going in Joomla 1.5 because many developers aren’t updating their modules (even some paid ones).
Because I am new to Joomla I thought 1.5.2 would be the way to go, I having second thoughts
In my reading, it seems that the big components, fireboard, performs, usually work fine in legacy mode. Is there a module or component that you are waiting for tekno?
…delayed, but CB 1.2 should be out soon! I was hoping it would be a little more modular, not a huge fan of the tabs, but this spoiler let me down…sounds like 2.0 will attempt to achieve this.
So what’s the big deal with 1.2 aside from native J1.5?
I’m really struggling to complete my site as well, due to the fact that so many major components have not upgraded to J1.5. I’m currently running CB 1.2 – which works just fine except for having zero layout options. It’s not modular at all which is difficult. Plus, I’m waiting for almost every single CB plug-in to upgrade. It’s tortuous.
Everything said in the above article is so wrong, but that’s just me talking so much months later. CB 1.2 is coming out this month (don’t know what they have been doing since the start in February?). But yeah, it took ¾ year to create, so hopefully it’s worth the waiting xD. And 2.0, with this kind of productivity rate, I guess it comes out in about 3 years (looks like Miccrosofts production speed xD). Not going to screw of Community Builder, because it’s a very good Component. It’s just that our team is still waiting for the knew version, while Joomla 1.5 has been out there for some time now!!! This was my view to it, enjoy your day!
You might be interested in checking out JomSocial from the azrul guys. It looks great!
The CB team has not been able to keep their timetable again and again. The much anticipated subscription plugin is vaporware, with promise after promise unmet. Too bad JomSocial has no e-commerce/membership system.
I don’t count on anything the CB team says. Good bunch of guys, I think they would be better served by making no announcements at all. I had planned to use CB for our 5000 member site, now we’re re-evaluating Drupal again.
My guess for CB 2.0? 2012.
