Social Networking on Joomla!

Recently in the Joomla! Forums, user dping28 mentioned that there is a beta version of Community Builder 1.2 (current stable version is 1.1):

And just a FYI Community Builder they currently have a beta ver 1.2 that we are testing and its in the process of becomming 1.5 native so legacy mode wont be needed.. Hope this helps..

The Joomla! community has come to rely on certain CB features and plugins, that it will be a welcome relief when CB goes 1.5 native.

In other Social Networking news in Joomla!, the occasionally whispered CB alternative Anahita was mentioned again recently on the J! Forums, this is from Rastin Mehr, of rmd studio inc:

“The GPL version of Anahita is on the way, we are working on it every week, but please be patient we do need some time to coordinate things, for example the fact that Joomla 1.5 is finally stable has helped a lot. ) (Read Full Thread)

For an idea of the software philosophy behind the folks at rmd, you can see their article on Social Networking technology which they have named a Social Network Management System (SMS).

Fans of Anahita could be in an awkward position. Many Joomla! users (including myself) have benefited from years of using Community Builder, many are frustrated with the difficulty of using CB, as well as the clunky and old fashioned appearance of the component.

Joomla 1.6 White Papers

Joomla! 1.5 just out of the gates, and already the bright minds in the Joomla Development Team are preparing the way for Joomla! 1.6. Who knows how long the period will be between now and and Joomla! 1.6 RC1, but personally, I am in no rush.

The jump from 1.0.x to 1.5 was what the developers called a major re-write, in that significant parts of the Joomla! code was re-written, forcing 3PDs (Third Party Developers) to update and modernise their extensions to run in the latest version. I absolutely love 1.5. I just love using it. But what I don’t love is waiting for 3PD’s to update their extensions to function in the new version of Joomla.

I am not being critical of 3PDs, everyone knows how much hard work (most of it volunteered) it is to develop and maintain software for open source projects like Joomla. I simply would like to see a very long period of watching (and helping when I can) developers migrate to 1.5, and then refine and polish their 1.5 software.

RC to 1.5.1

Joomla 1.5.1 Security ReleaseThe last time I posted some Joomla news, the latest and greatest  Joomla! release was 1.5 RC4.  And now just recently we have been graced by the first minor update to the stable release of Joomla 1.5, 1.5.1!

This is a security release, and as you all know, is highly recommended to upgrade. You can read more at the official Joomla website here.
